Foxtrot in Alexandria

Foxtrot, which billed itself as a “modern corner store, café, and delivery market,” closed all 33 of its gourmet stores, including 11 in the DMV.

Two of those stores that offered grab-and-go meals, pantry staples, and other everyday essentials were in Alexandria and Arlington. The Alexandria store, which opened in 2022, had a prominent location at the corner of King and Washington streets in a 4,500-square-foot, two-story building, the former home to Le Pain Quotidien. The Arlington store in Rosslyn on Pierce Street opened in January 2023.

The abrupt closure on Tuesday of the Chicago-based stores surprised employees who found out Tuesday morning. It comes as Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market, a small grocery chain, plan to file for bankruptcy. The two businesses merged just five months ago.

A message posted on Foxtrot’s website said the closures affected two Dom’s stores and 33 Foxtrots in Illinois, Texas, and the DMV.

“We explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option despite good faith and exhaustive efforts,” the post said. “This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on you, our loyal customers, as well as our dedicated team members. We want to express our sincerest gratitude for your support and patronage throughout the years.”
